Alcohol Testing Process

1. Breath Alcohol Testing

The DOT Breath Alcohol Testing process begins at the Collection Site.

  • Driver provides a breath sample
  • A Breath Alcohol Technician (BAT) performs the test using an approved testing device
  • The required DOT Alcohol Testing Form is completed

Collection Site → BAT → Initial Test

2. Confirmation Testing

The initial test determines whether a Confirmation Test is required.

  • A result below 0.02 completes the testing process
  • A result of 0.02 or higher requires a Confirmation Test
  • The Confirmation Test is conducted after the required waiting period
  • The Confirmation Test determines the final alcohol concentration

Initial Test → Confirmation Test (if required)

3. Results

The final alcohol concentration determines the action that must be taken.

  • Below 0.02: Negative
  • 0.02–0.039: Driver cannot perform safety-sensitive duties for at least 24 hours
  • 0.04 or higher: Positive Results

Breath Alcohol Test → Confirmation Test (if required) → Final Results
