DOT’s Breath Alcohol Testing Process
Testing → Procedure → Initial Screening → Results Determination
1. Testing Process
- Driver reports to a DOT certified collection site with the QPassport
- A DOT certified breath alcohol technician (BAT) will verify the driver’s ID, explain the testing procedure, and administer the test
2. Testing Procedure
- The driver is required to provide a sufficient breath sample into an approved evidential breath testing device (EBT), which analyzes the sample to determine alcohol concentration and generates a printout of the test results
3. Initial Screening
- The result is negative if the alcohol concentration is below DOT’s threshold of (0.02)
- DOT requires a confirmation test if the alcohol concentration is at or above (0.02)
4. Positive with (0.02 or greater but less than 0.04)
- DOT requires the driver to be removed from driving for 24 hours with an alcohol concentration of (0.02) or greater but less than (0.04) after the confirmation test
5. Positive Results with (0.04 or greater)
- DOT requires the driver to be removed from the road immediately and given an SAP referral with an alcohol concentration of (0.04) or greater
- The employer is required by DOT to report positive breath alcohol results to the FMCSA Clearinghouse
